It helps prevent injury from undesirable movements and curb the fear of being at the dentist. We administer oral medication based on age and weight that serves as a conscious sedation. This medicine is used safely and effectively when administered by a pediatric dentist who follows the sedation guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is often used as a conscious sedative during a dental visit. The calming effect from laughing gas helps patients that are fearful or anxious relax during their dental treatment. Patients are still conscious and able to communicate with their dentist while on laughing gas. The gas is turned off after the treatment and the patient is given oxygen for five to ten minutes to help push any remaining gas. Laughing gas rarely has side effects, but your dental professional will provide you with any post-procedure instructions.
If your child is very young or has extensive work to be done, treatment is performed in a hospital setting as outpatient under general anesthesia. This allows all work to be completed on that day and removes the anxiety of repeated visits to the dentist for work.
